GI_Forum provides a platform for dialogue among geospatial minds, informing the GeoInformation Society, contributing to a more just, ethical and sustainable society.

 GI_Forum 2021 | re.connecting spatially

Geoinformatics today demonstrates the enormous potentials of georeferencing technologies and is recognized as a core contributor for digitization in all areas of our lives and economies. In order to direct societies and economies (back) to a “well-functioning” upwards trajectory primarily requires close coupling of our real and virtual worlds by means of location and current position.

Coordinates connect all location-based data with contextual information. Integration by means of ‘spatial joins’ results in new information, thus, providing additional knowledge for decision-making processes for science, economy and our entire society.

COVID-compliant planning for 2021

As organizers we carefully follow the current developments regarding COVID-19. Given that most participants of the GI_Forum are colleagues travelling internationally to get to Salzburg, we decided to organize the 2021 GI_Forum once again as virtual conference, with selected on-site events (provided the situation allows it). FYI: the German-language AGIT is currently being planned as an on-site conference.

Authors of submitted contributions will be notified by March 16 about the time of their presentation.

Networking on every level

GI_Forum’s characteristic mix of scientific symposium and international networking platform, paired with a German language sister conference, AGIT and its EXPO, makes for an interesting exchange among colleagues. The GI_Week in Salzburg is a unique opportunity to meet experts in the field; to discuss the latest research in and outside many different sessions; gain hands-on experience in numerous workshops; or start a new project over a cup of coffee or during a walk on the premises of the University of Salzburg’s Faculty of Natural Sciences.

GI_Forum is organized by the Department of Geoinformatics – Z_GIS, University of Salzburg and in cooperation with the Austrian Academy of Sciences, and runs concurrently with the highly regarded German language conference on Applied Geoinformatics – AGIT. The two symposia share the innovative AGIT EXPO exhibit and stimulating social events.

Call for Papers

You would like to actively shape the GI_Forum program? Choose the format that best fits your needs: a scientific lecture, a hands-on workshop, or a poster presentation – GI_Forum offers a wide variety of possibilities to present yourself.

The Call for Papers is open from October 1, 2020 until February 1, 2021

Check our website for more details and for instructions on how to submit your contribution >

Thematic Focus 2021

We welcome contributions of the entire GIScience realm, including different perspectives from various professions and disciplines. Submissions concentrate on innovation in education, science, methodology and technologies in the spatial domain and their role towards a more just, ethical, sustainable and open science and society. Hence the focus of GI_Forum 2021 is on but not limited to:

Submissions must be in English language. The review for full- and short papers is double-blind. Consult the author information guidelines published at the conference website for further details. Successful manuscripts will be published in the GI_Forum Journal which is now included in SCOPUS and the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ).

Submissions will be published in Issue 2 of the GI_Forum Journal.

We intentionally limit the thematic foci of 2021 to the above mentioned themes. These are to be considered in addition to the themes of this year’s International Symposium on Digital Earth (ISDE). In case you would like to submit a contribution to the thematic field of the ISDE 2021, please note that ticket prices listed there apply. For more information on the ISDE 2021, please visit

ISDE 2021 in Salzburg during GI_Week

The International Symposium on Digital Earth (ISDE) takes place for the 12th time in 2021. The department of Geoinformatics-Z_GIS organizes this conference together with GI_Forum and AGIT in July 2021. For a full list of topics, as well as more details visit

Contributions to ISDE 2021 will be published as “special issue” of the GI_Forum Journal Issue 1.

GI_Forum Journal for Geographic Information Science

GI_Forum publishes high quality original research across the transdisciplinary field of Geographic Information Science (GIScience). The journal provides a platform for dialogue among GI-Scientists and educators, technologists and critical thinkers in an ongoing effort to advance the field and ultimately contribute to the expansion of an informed GISociety. Submissions concentrate on innovation in education, science, methodology and technologies in the spatial domain and their role towards a more just, ethical and sustainable science and society.

The GI_Forum Journal is published in two annual issues (end of June / end of November). This allows for improved review and revision routines, ultimately leading to an overall higher quality of the journal.

All submitted contributions, which pass the multi-level review process successfully, are invited to present at the GI_Forum. In addition, these contributions will be published in the GI_Forum Journal Issue 1 or 2.
