GIScience and Learning with Geomedia

The GI_Forum provides a platform for dialogue among geospatial minds in an ongoing effort to support the creation of an informed GISociety. Bearing in mind different perspectives from a variety of professions, presentations, workshops and exhibitions will concentrate on innovations in education, science and technologies, in the spatial domain and their possible contribution to a more just, ethical and sustainable society.

The 2017 GI_Forum motto is ‘geospatial@online’; we thus solicit contributions as full and short papers focusing on, but not limited to the following themes:

Fast simulation of spatial rainfall patterns

Abstract: Rainfall patterns have impact on droughts, floods, agriculture or public health and are thus of importance for various disciplines in earth sciences. The daily rainfall generator TripleM (Multisite Markov Model) is a reduced-complexity code for generating rainfall at multiple sites at low computational costs. TripleM has originally been developed at Z_GIS and been further improved at Uppsala University (Sweden) to allow for simulations at larger spatial scales. We will present the theory behind the model and provide hands-on exercises using the now publicly available MATLAB code. We will likewise address opportunities and challenges of stochastic rainfall modelling.

Target group/ requirements: Earth scientists or engineers that work with weather extremes and deal with floods, droughts, agriculture, public health and climate change.
